Diversified world: drive to life's origin?!

چکیده
What is decisive for the origin of life? Here we do not want to delve into the chemical details but attempt to look at the fundamental motivation which leads to the remarkable process of self-organization to simplest forms of life. That should be useful to stimulate experimentation. It is often assumed that in principle life can arise in a homogeneous medium or at a reactive interface by intrinsic necessity (see, for example, reference [1]). Processes of this type are known, but is it really possible that such a process can lead to a machine as intricate as the genetic apparatus of biosystems? The idea that life arises slowly in a chaos of lifeless matter is fascinating, but is life×s emergence not a process dfferent in principle? Are not quite special highly diversified environmental conditions changing periodically in a particular way required as the driving force for the formation of increasingly more complex forms, evolving to forms of early life?

An Intelligent Control Strategy in a Parallel Hybrid Vehicle
This paper presents a design procedure for an adaptive power management control strategy based on a driving cycle recognition algorithm. The design goal of the control strategy is to minimize fuel consumption and engine-out NOx, HC and CO emissions on a set of diversified driving schedules. Seven facility-specific drive cycles are considered to represent different driving scenarios. For each fa...

"We'll never be able to know" is a truism that leads to resignation with respect to any experimental effort to search for the chemistry of life's origin. But such resignation runs radically counter to the challenge imposed upon chemistry as a natural science. Notwithstanding the prognosis according to which the shortest path to understanding the metamorphosis of the chemical into the biological...
متن کاملProton gradients at the origin of life.
Chemiosmotic coupling - the harnessing of electrochemical ion gradients across membranes to drive metabolism - is as universally conserved as the genetic code. As argued previously in these pages, such deep conservation suggests that ion gradients arose early in evolution, and might have played a role in the origin of life. Alkaline hydrothermal vents harbour pH gradients of similar polarity an...
متن کاملConstructing an RNA world.
A popular theory of life's origins states that the first biocatalysts were not made of protein but were made of RNA or a very similar polymer. Experiments are beginning to confirm that the catalytic abilities of RNA are compatible with this 'RNA world' hypothesis. For example, RNA can synthesize short fragments of RNA in a template-directed fashion and promote formation of peptide, ester and gl...
متن کاملEvidence for contemporary evolution during Darwin's lifetime
Darwin's On the Origin of Species[1] introduced the world to the most fundamental concept in biological sciences - evolution. However, in the 150 years following publication of his seminal work, much has been made of the fact that Darwin was missing at least one crucial link in his chain of evidence - he had no evidence for contemporary evolution through natural selection. Indeed, as one commen...
